Who Should Go Number One?

By: Dan Berlin, Pro-Am Blogger - 12/04/2013

With former NHL superstars like Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark, Theo Fleury, Gary Roberts, Marcel Dionne and Paul Coffey all taking to the ice at the 2013 Scotiabank Pro-Am for Alzheimer's hockey tournament, the question remains: who will be taken first overall in this year’s draft?

We won’t know until the event’s legendary Draft Party on May 2 at Real Sports Bar and Grill in Toronto. That’s the night where the 30 participating teams will be ranked from top to bottom on the draft board, based on their team’s total amount of funds raised for the event. The team with the highest total gets the coveted first overall pick, and with it, the chance to have first choice of the 30 NHL alumni participating in the two-day tournament, held May 3-4 at Canlan Ice Sports at York University.

And the decision about who to draft first just got a whole lot tougher. The latest roster addition was just announced – and it’s BIG. Legendary hall-of-fame defenseman Ray Bourque is now confirmed for the eighth annual tournament, and the former Stanley Cup champion – making his debut at the Scotiabank Pro-Am - is sure to draw a ton of interest from the top fundraising teams.

Who to choose? It’s a tough call, for sure. So we thought we’d lend the teams a helping hand by asking some of the NHL alumni taking part to make a case as to why they should go first overall in the draft.

Wendel’s ready … are you?
